The fury of Mother Nature in Mumbai
The devastation caused by the flooding, in Mumbai's recent deadly rains (with 26 INCHES in a day!) left me shocked. To see pictures of Kurla bus station completely under water was stunning. I used to take a bus to Kurla terminus and then onto Matunga when I was in grade school in Mumbai many many years ago.
It was touching to hear stories of how people stood by open drains for hours to warn people who might otherwise fall into them. People spent hours walking senior citizens home through the night of tuesday and wednesday of last week, as rain continued to lash the city, creating a deluge in the streets of India's most populous commercial city.
People have lost their flats in low-lying areas and the damage will no doubt be in the billions of rupees. 20 million residents were affected in one way or another, close to 1.4 million vehicles unable to do their duty of ferrying people to and fro and all this in 30 sq. km (about 20 sq. miles) of land...Sad, sad, sad
